Money Lessons We’re Thankful For: Passing Down the Gift of Financial Wisdom

November 26, 2024

As we gather for Thanksgiving and reflect on what we're thankful for, I often think about the invaluable money lessons I've learned from family. I hope to continue these lessons and pass them on to my clients and their families. This Thanksgiving, I wanted to share the lessons I learned early I'm most thankful for and encourage you to think of yours so you can pass your wisdom along.  I thank my parents for passing their lessons on to me!

The Power of Budgeting and

Living Within Your Means

One of the greatest lessons I learned from my parents was the importance of budgeting. My Mom handled the day to day expenses and shopping, while my Dad earned and invested the money.  It helped me to understand the value of a dollar, understand how to prioritize, and learn the difference between need and want. It also taught me how to research and compare to make my budget go further.

Planning for the Unexpected

Watching my family weather financial surprises taught me the importance of an emergency fund and proper insurance. My parents prepared for these moments by keeping a portion of their income in savings, giving them a safety net when emergencies arose. When I was old enough to understand, I realized having that fund allowed my parents to handle unexpected events with less stress.

Starting to Save and Invest

Early and Consistently

I was introduced to the magic of compounding early on. Starting small but saving and investing consistently, even when it felt like I had little to spare, has made a significant difference. Tony and I have been contributing to our retirement accounts since we started working.  Even during the financial crisis, we kept adding to our retirement accounts.  It meant there were no vacations for a number of years, but that was something we were willing to forego so that our retirement could be more secure.

Passing Down the Gift of

Financial Independence

As you gather to share meals and stories, share your wisdom. Financial independence isn't just about building wealth; it's about finding stability and joy in life. You never know what part of your experience will impact the next generation. And what better legacy could we leave than that?
