CrowdStrike Outage: Increase in Targeted Phishing Attempts

July 30, 2024

You’re likely familiar with the name “CrowdStrike” after the chaos caused by a faulty update recently. Given that the incident is being heralded as "the largest IT outage in history," we wanted to briefly overview the "CrowdStrike Outage" and inform you of some malicious scams arising from the situation you should be aware of.

As an overview:

What is "CrowdStrike"?

CrowdStrike is a prominent cybersecurity company dedicated to helping organizations protect their IT infrastructure from malicious threats. Its platform is trusted by more than 500 of the Fortune 1000 companies for internal security. With over 1 billion computers protected, CrowdStrike's reach extends to devices within and outside major corporate entities.

What happened?

On July 18, 2024, a faulty update was deployed through CrowdStrike's platform. This update caused affected computers to enter a boot loop, which is when devices repeatedly fail to complete the booting process and restart before the sequence is completed, preventing them from fully loading. This resulted in the screen many of us are familiar with: the blue screen of death.

However, because of the latest CrowdStrike incident, bad actors are trying to take advantage.
